Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders

Treating eating disorders can be overwhelming and clinicians may find themselves feeling out of their depth and struggling with resistance that is common with this diagnostic presentation.  This two day training is aimed at demystifying eating disorders and how to formulate and treatment plan from a schema therapy perspective.  The workshop looks at common schemas and modes found in various Eating Disorder presentations and common co-morbidities.  The main learning objectives are as follows:

  • Understanding diagnosis and assessment of Eating Disorder presentation and co-morbidities
  • Understanding underlying trauma that is commonly found in Eating Disorders
  • How to detect eating pathology and specific questioning techniques
  • Treating body image and how the body is used to express eating pathology
  • applying schema therapy treatment in different settings, inpatient, outpatient and private practice.
  • understanding the multidisciplinary team in treatment and who has what role? GP’s, dietician, psychologist and psychiatrists.
  • To weigh or not to weigh
  • comparison to other evidenced based approach’s to eating pathology
  • the pace of therapy with eating pathology and subsequent treatment planning.
  • working with resistance that is commonly found in patients with eating pathology
  • Using powerful schema therapy emotion focussed techniques in working with typical coping modes, child modes and critic modes found in eating disorder patients.

Registration Details 

This workshop will be held on Monday the 15th of August and Tuesday the 16th from 9.30 to 4.30pm and will be held at STIA Essendon location – 172 Buckley Street Essendon, 3041.  Please arrive 15minutes earlier for registration purposes.

Cost is $549 or $599 with lunch – please indicate upon checkout your preference and any dietary requirements.  This workshop will be capped at 20 participants, please register early in order to avoid disappointment.

This workshops counts towards Continuing Education for ISST certification purposes or 15 hours of professional development for registration purposes.

About the Presenter 

Dr Suzy Redston is a certified schema therapist and consultant psychiatrist with over 15 years experience in working with both eating disorders and complex trauma.  Dr Suzy Redstone is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).

Suzy has worked with people who are affected by eating disorders in inpatient & outpatient services in Melbourne & Geelong. Looked after people from 11 years old to 65 and on the Board of EDV for over 6 years; she has presented at conferences about eating disorders and schema as well as contributing to the education of Psychiatric registrars, GPs and medical students about eating disorders and co-morbidities.  In her previous life Suzy worked in the Army as a GP and Emergency doctor treating people with many problems including PTSD and trauma related mental illnesses. Ran the Psychological Trauma & Recovery Service at Austin Health from 2013 – 2017 and in that role treated and supervised treatment of police, fire fighters, defence force members and others with trauma related mental illnesses.

She was previously the Medical Director of Austin Health Mental Health which is a service that provides comprehensive hospital-based, community and specialist services to youth, adults, older people and veterans in northern Melbourne. This role was from 2017 – 2021 & included leading the whole mental health division through the first few years of the Covid-19 pandemic. Suzy is passionate about educating clinicians on eating disorders and helping them treat, what is typically, viewed as a difficult and overwhelming client group.
